With a new month comes an update on the cheapest supermarkets in the UK.
From Asda and Aldi, to Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Lidl, we all have our favourites, but one of them is cheaper than the rest.
At this point, some of you may be thinking 'this is not news'. But the fact is - it is news, and it's a topic. So if you don't want to save money at the supermarket, by all means, go and continue with your day - we won't be offended.
If you do want to get the best deals because you either want to save money after a pandemic left loads of us in the sh*t, you have a whole family to feed or you're just interested, then you're in the right place.
To find out how supermarkets compared in terms of value for money in August 2020, consumer experts Which? took 74 products in eight of the UK's biggest brands, and carried out a price comparison.
Using an independent price comparison website, Which? calculated the average price (including special offers but not multibuys) for each item throughout the month. They then added those individual averages together to give an overall price for the trolley at each shop for the month.
The results were as follows:
1. Aldi - £66.45
2. Lidl - £67.17
3. Asda - £74.12
4. Tesco - £82.11
5. Morrisons - £84.73
6. Sainsbury's - £87.45
7. Ocado - £100.16
8. Waitrose - £105.25
Aldi has now issued a statement about maintaining its crown as the UK's cheapest supermarket.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: "We know that this is a difficult time for many and so we are incredibly proud to have maintained our position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket.
"We remain wholly committed to continuing to provide our customers with the best value products of any supermarket."
