And a Which? investigation has confirmed budget-friendly favourite Lidl was the cheapest supermarket in May 2021.

Which? investigated every day throughout May, checking the prices of 20 food, drink and household items at every major UK supermarket.

Items included tomatoes and chicken drumsticks, as well as branded goods such as Nescafe coffee.

Its price comparison basket consisted of a combination of own-label and branded products, including groceries and household essentials, with Lidl coming the cheapest at £22.66.

The news comes after the supermarket was declared the cheapest in the UK in February and March - and for the whole of 2020.
