UK residents think workplaces and schools should be shut down during coronavirus pandemic

A survey of thousands of people in the UK has overwhelmingly shown that they want schools and workplaces to close down while the nation deals with the coronavirus crisis.

Local news and community website In Your Area polled more than 13,000 people over the weekend, and 59 per cent of respondents were in favour of closing establishments until the virus is contained. Only 28 per cent think they should stay open, while 13 per cent said they didn't know.

Broken down by region, the map below shows that the vast majority want the shutdown, with only three regions disagreeing.

Of the Bristol residents polled, 65 per cent voted in favour of the shutdown, while 20 per cent did not think it was a good idea, and 15 per cent said they did not know.

Boris Johnson is to address the nation on the coronavirus threat later this afternoon (Monday) after meeting ministers and officials to consider measures including banning mass gatherings and lengthy household isolation for the elderly. You can follow our updates here.

The number of positive cases in Bristol is now said to be five while the number of cases in North Somerset remains zero.

There are now two cases in the Bath and North East Somerset area.

Around a quarter of a million people have signed a petition calling for the closure of schools and colleges across the UK.

The petition – Close Schools/Colleges down for an appropriate amount of time amidst COVID19 – asks the government to ‘at least consider’ widespread closures as the number of UK cases of the virus continues to rise.
