UK reports highest daily Covid deaths toll since March

The UK reported the highest number of daily Covid deaths since March, with 146 people passing away in the last 24 hours.

A further 23,510 cases have also been recorded in the last 24-hour period, representing a significant drop in the number of positive infections compared to recent weeks.

The figures have come along with new statistics which show the weekly death rate has risen to its highest level since March. At that point the UK was still in lockdown with a number of legal restrictions on contact still in place.

Covid related deaths registered in the week up to July 30 were 404 - the highest figure since 719 deaths were recorded for the week up to March 26.

The current number of daily positive cases is significantly lower than previous expectations, with initial estimates suggesting 100,000 cases a day was a possibility in the aftermath of so called Freedom Day on July 19.

One month ago, on July 10, there were 32,367 positive cases, showing initial fears over a new wave and large numbers of cases when legal Coronavirus restrictions were lifted have been misplaced.

The strength of the vaccine rollout continues to be shown in the case numbers, with 75% of the adult population in the UK now having received both jabs.

Over 86,000,000 vaccine doses have now been administered, with 39,688,566 people now having both jabs.

Despite the drop in cases, deaths are yet to lower similarly, this is due to the rise in cases in previous weeks and the delay between someone catching Coronavirus then becoming seriously ill and tragically passing away.

In Liverpool, there are currently 1788 positive cases, with 3 people having passed away from Coronavirus in the last 7 days. The number of positive cases is a small increase on the previous week.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 359 per 100,000 people in Liverpool, with a positive testing rate of 9.8%. 18,436 people in Liverpool have taken a PCR test in the past 7 days.
