UK reports 49 more coronavirus-related deaths and nearly 1,000 new cases

A further 49 people have died with coronavirus in the UK according to the latest figures.

According to data published on the Public Health England (PHE) dashboard on Thursday (August 6)an additional 49 deaths were recorded in all settings.

This is the second lowest Thursday death toll since lockdown began on March 23, but a rise of 11 on last Thursday's number.

Meanwhile a further 950 coronavirus tests came back positive, up by 49 from the day before.

This is the highest number of positive cases recorded in the UK in a single day since June 26.

It brings the seven day rolling average of cases up to 835, compared with 590 at the same point in July.

The UK's overall death toll has now reached 46,413 and the total number of confirmed  coronavirus  cases to 308,134.

Today's daily increase of 49 additional deaths is the second lowest so far this week, with nine recorded on Monday, 89 on Tuesday and 65 on Wednesday.

The death figures collated by PHE includes deaths in hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

The Department of Health  has paused the publication of its daily death figures  while a review is conducted into how the data is compiled by PHE.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 56,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
