UK records 32,367 new Covid cases and 34 deaths

The UK has recorded 32,367 new Covid cases and 34 deaths on Saturday, official figures show.

That brings the total UK death toll to 128,399.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 153,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Government data up to July 9 shows that of the 80,327,679 Covid jabs given in the UK so far, 45,786,550 were first doses – a rise of 88,675 on the previous day.

Some 34,541,129 were second doses – an increase of 166,883.

It comes as infection rates are rising rapidly with the Health Secretary Sadid Javid recently saying he expected to see as many as 100,000 cases a day.

The rising infection rates - powered by new variants of the disease - had led to a warning that hospitals could be left short staffed this year.

NHS Providers, the membership organisation for NHS trusts in England, said a combination of staff having to self-isolate due to rising infection levels and people “rightly” taking annual leave delayed due to the pandemic is likely to put a strain on the health service.

The organisation said a growing number of trusts had told them of their concerns in recent days about how self-isolation of staff is now “significantly impacting their ability to deliver care”.
