UK records 174 new Covid-19 deaths - highest daily total since middle of March

A further 174 people have died in the UK after testing positive for Covid-19 - the highest daily rise since March 12.

According to the latest government figures there have also been a further 30,838 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

It means 131,854 people have now died in the UK after contracting the virus.

Government data up to August 23 shows that of the 89,679,178 Covid jabs given in the UK, 47,737,142 were first doses, a rise of 46,401 on the previous day.

Some 41,942,036 were second doses, an increase of 131,283.

Earlier today the Office of National Statistics said England and Wales has recorded the highest total of weekly coronavirus-related deaths since the week of March 26.

A total of 571 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending August 13 included 'Covid-19' on the death certificate – up 8% on the previous week.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon has said the Scottish Government will begin an independent inquiry into the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic by the end of the year.

The First Minister said the judge-led inquiry would have a “person-centred, human rights-based” approach.

A draft of aims and principles for the inquiry was published on Tuesday, with members of the public invited to comment until September 30.
