UK records 149 UK more coronavirus deaths in latest Department of Health update

The UK may be starting to come out of the coronavirus lockdown but a worrying number of people are still sadly dying from the virus.

In its latest update, the Department of Health said a further 149 Covid-19 deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

Not all of these deaths will have occured in the past 24 hours but this is when they have been officially recorded.

The latest deaths take the government's official total to 43, 230.

However, Office for National Statistics data estimates the real death toll across the country at closer to 55,000.

A tweet from the Department of Health today said: "As of 9am 25 June, there have been 8,710,292 tests, with 167,023 tests on 24 June. 307,980 people have tested positive. As of 5pm on 24 June, of those tested positive for coronavirus, across all settings, 43,230 have sadly died."

From next Saturday, the government will allow pubs, bars, restaurants and hairdressers to re-open as well as many other businesses.

While this news has been welcomed by many businesses, there are real fears that the changes could lead to a second wave of the virus.

Britain's leading medical experts have written an open letter calling for an urgent review of whether the country is properly prepared for the "real risk" of another fight against Covid-19.

There is a suggestion that a new peak could hit after Christmas, with as many as 60 people dying per day.

The letter published in the British Medical Journal warns ministers that urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life and to protect the economy.

The appeal is backed by the presidents of the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Surgeons, GPs and Nursing - as well as the chairman of the British Medical Association.
