Covid deaths jumped by 149 on Wednesday in the second deadliest day this week.
It followed on from the 176 deaths recorded on Tuesday which marked the highest number of deaths recorded in the UK since March.
New infections climbed up to 35,847 mid-week.
The death toll stands at 132,003 in the UK.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 156,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
The success of the rollout with vaccines remains evident with a total of 89,865,264 Covid jabs given out.
There were 47,792,552 first doses, a rise of 55,410 on the previous day.
The UK recorded 42,072,712 second doses to date, an increase of 130,676 from the previous day.
More good news hit headlines as an expert revealed coronavirus vaccines still provide “good protection” despite new research suggesting the effects can wear off after six months.
Professor Adam Finn, member of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), said the jabs have still starving off serious disease and hospital admissions.
He acknowledged studies have showed an waning immunity against mild illness some months after vaccination.
He said: “[It’s] encouraging actually that people who’ve had two doses are still very much well protected against serious illness, which is our main objective.
“But we do need to watch out very carefully to see if this waning begins to translate into occurrence of more severe cases because then boosters will be needed.”
