UK records 11 coronavirus deaths in past day - lowest increase since March 12

The UK has recorded 11 coronavirus deaths over the past day - the lowest daily increase since March 12.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 44,830 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Sunday - up by 11 from 44,819 the previous day.

This is the lowest number reported by DHSC since March 12 but reporting is often lower on weekends and the Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have passed 55,500.

The DHSC also said that in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Monday, there had been a further 530 lab-confirmed UK cases.

The increase is the lowest since March 12 (PA)

Overall, a total of 290,133 cases have been confirmed.

It comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) warned the global pandemic would get worse if countries failed to stick to strict precautions.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: "Let me be blunt, too many countries are headed in the wrong direction, the virus remains public enemy number one."

"If basics are not followed, the only way this pandemic is going to go - it is going to get worse and worse and worse."

Global infections stand at 13 million, according to a Reuters tally, with more than half a million deaths.

Mr Ghebreyesus, whose leadership has been heavily criticised by U.S. President Donald Trump, said that of 230,000 new cases on Sunday, 80% were from 10 nations, and 50% from just two countries.
