UK pub bosses cheer mega takings from Rugby World Cup final

Mega takings thanks to the Rugby World Cup final have helped pub bosses get over the England loss to South Africa.

Fuller’s chief Simon Emeny said on Saturday his firm sold a record number of breakfasts in a day, more than double its previous high.

Young’s chief executive Patrick Dardis said it was a record November day. At The Ship in Wandsworth, sales were 100% higher than a typical Saturday at this time of year.

Dominic Collingwood, co-founder of the Matchpint app, said 366 pubs inside the M25 had indicated they would be showing the early morning game. With just under a fifth of sports pubs and bars signed up to the app this suggests close to 2,000 opened early on Saturday.

Collingwood added that the previous games have also benefited pubs.

He told the Evening Standard last week: “On average, we’ve had 25,000 fans search for a pub at the last minute to watch each England game to date.”
