UK prisoners given spider therapy to boost self-esteem and 'ease tensions'

Inmates are being encouraged to handle a tarantula to ease tension and raise self-esteem.

The 5in spider is taken into jails along with a skunk, a blue-tongued skink lizard and a pair of ferrets.

Experts say animal therapy and handling the likes of Katarina – a Chilean fire tarantula with a venomous bite – can work wonders.

Dale Preece-Kelly, an animal assisted therapy practitioner who runs Critterish Allsorts, said: “The therapy is proven to improve the spirit-mind body interconnectedness, reducing anxiety and blood pressure.”

The scheme is currently being run at category B jails in Doncaster, South Yorks, and Dovegate in Uttoxeter, Staffs – along with Drake Hall women’s jail in Eccleshall, Staffs.

John Hewitson, Serco Prison Director at HMP Doncaster, said: “The experiences really help prisoners with their mental health."
