UK on track for hottest-ever summer on record

  • The UK has experienced an unprecedented summer with four consecutive heatwaves, making it “almost certainly” the hottest on record, the Met Office has confirmed.
  • Temperatures reached 29.1C in Hawarden and 24.5C in Magilligan over the bank holiday, setting new records for Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively.

  • This change is partly due to a low-pressure system caused by the remnants of Hurricane Erin, leading to a mobile westerly regime with little signal for further warmth.
  • While another heatwave in 2025 is unlikely, climate experts predict extreme weather events like this summer's heatwaves will become more common due to ongoing climate change.
