UK official Covid-19 death count up by 315 as daily toll drops almost 1,000 in a week

A further 315 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the UK.

This is down by more than 25% on last Wednesday when 442 fatalities were announced.

The number of new deaths over the last seven days has gone down by 951 in a week - a drop of more than a third.

Coronavirus cases are up by 6,385 today, which is way down on the 9,938 reported last Wednesday.

It comes after the UK's hospital death count rose by 255 today - the lowest Wednesday rise since October.

NHS England has announced 204 further deaths, Scotland recorded 35 more deaths, in Wales 12 more people have died and in Northern Ireland there have been another 4 fatalities.

The total today is the lowest Wednesday increase since October 28 when 248 deaths were recorded.

Last Wednesday, February 24, the death toll rose by 364 - a sharp drop from the 622 deaths recorded the previous week.

The previous Wednesday, February 17, the tragic toll was up by 622, which at the time was the lowest Wednesday toll since 556 deaths were reported on December 30.

Yesterday the death toll increased by 315 with one of the victims aged only 17.

NHS England today reported that a further 204 people, who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 83,733.

Patients were aged between 32 and 100 years old. All except 7 (aged 63 to 88 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

Scotland has recorded 35 deaths from coronavirus and 543 positive tests in the past 24 hours, Scottish Government figures show.

It brings the death toll under this measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - to 7,371.

The latest statistics show 203,155 people have tested positive in Scotland, up from 203,012 the previous day.

The daily test positivity rate is 2.6%, down from 4.4%.

Of the new cases, 150 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 77 in Lothian and 102 in Lanarkshire.

There are 750 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 34 in 24 hours, and 69 patients are in intensive care, down two.
