UK official coronavirus death toll up by 98 as 871 new cases recorded in last day

The UK's coronavirus death count has increased by 98 in the past day, while the number of infections climbed up by 871.

It comes after the number of fatalities went up by 49 yesterday, with 950 new cases.

Today's figure is the lowest Friday rise in almost a month after a previous increase of 48 on July 10.

There were 120 deaths a week ago today, adding to the sense that and 880 cases.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus 'R rate' could be above one in London, the North West and the South West, meaning the disease is spreading.

Hospital fatalities also shot up by 17 over the past day, with 10 in England.

Wales reported seven new coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 1,578.

Northern Ireland reported 15 more positive Covid-19 cases but no new deaths.

The total number of cases is 6,064 in Northern Ireland and the number of deaths remains at 556.

No new deaths were reported in Scotland, meaning the death toll remains at 2,491.

Fears are growing about Brits failing to distance themselves from each other on overcrowded beaches as they soak up the sun today.

Bournemouth Council’s Beach Check app showed that eight beaches were full today - Durley Chine, Sandbanks, Mudeford Sandspit, Mudeford Quay, Avon Beach, Friar’s Cliff, Highcliffe Castle and Highcliffe Beach.

Locals are furious over images of packed beaches, with many criticising the lack of social distancing, people not wearing masks and warning beachgoers could 'undo the hard work of lockdown'.

One angry Twitter user posted images of a packed Brighton beach and said: "Do these people realise that COVID-19 is still around?

"Beaches are full, and no social distancing... idiots."
