UK motorists warned of new number plate rule which could see drivers fined

Drivers in the UK have been warned to check their number plates before driving abroad after a new rule came into play last week.

GB stickers which have been previously displayed on British cars when travelling abroad for a whopping 111 years are no longer valid.

Following a rule change on September 28, drivers must have a new UK style number plate design or will be required to place a UK sticker on the back of their vehicles.

The new updates came after the United Nations received a “notification that the United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign”.

According to GOV.UK, drivers will need a UK sticker if their plate comes with a GB identifier, Euro symbol or national flag.

Number plates without any symbols or logos will also need a UK sticker when travelling abroad

GOV.UK also confirms drivers with a GB sticker would need to “cover or remove it” before travelling outside the UK.

They wrote: "You will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag
  • a Euro symbol
  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
  • numbers and letters only - no flag or identifier

“If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK.”

The penalty for displaying the incorrect sticker has not yet been announced but if you're planning on taking your car abroad it's important to change your sticker before you go to avoid breaking the law.
