Millions of motorists were today warned not to stop at petrol or motorway service stations unless “you really need to” amid rising levels of coronavirus.
The Government this morning issued fresh travel guidance.
For motorists, it includes:
- Only stop at petrol stations or motorway service stations if you really need to.
- If you have to stop, try to make sure you are social distancing.
- Always wash your hands before and after you travel.
The 34-page document advises people to try not to share a car with individuals that they don’t live with or who are not in their “support bubble”.
It adds that if people have to share a car, try to do so with the same people each time.
In addition, people in the vehicle should keep the windows open and face away from each other.
Individuals using public transport are advised to try to travel at off-peak times when services are less busy.
People must wear a face covering, unless exempt, or risk a fine which has been raised to £200.
“If the police ask to see your face to check who you are, you should take it off,” the document adds.
In circumstances where stations or services are crowded and it is not possible to social distance, travellers close together should:
- Face away from them if you can.
- Move away as soon as you can.
Passengers should also not eat or drink on public transport unless they need to do so.
For all people, it advises against travel if they have Covid-19 symptoms or “share a house with someone who has coronavirus or think they have it”.
The guidance says walking or cycling is the best way to travel if people can.
