UK medicines regulator approves new weight loss pill

  • The UK's MHRA has become the first regulator in Europe to authorise orforglipron, known as Foundayo, a daily pill for weight loss and type 2 diabetes.
  • Manufactured by Eli Lilly, the GLP-1 receptor agonist medication works by lowering blood sugar levels, slowing digestion, and reducing appetite.
  • The prescription-only tablet is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition.
  • Taken once a day without food or water restrictions, the treatment involves a monthly step-up in dosage levels.
  • Although authorised in the UK, Foundayo is not yet available on the NHS and must first be evaluated by health watchdog NICE.
