UK households could get £600 warm home discount under government plans

Members of the public could get a £600 warm home discount as part of plans being drawn up by the government. Chancellor Rishi Sunak is looking to tackle the Cost of Living crisis after levels of inflation hit their highest level in more than 40 years earlier this week.

The payment could reportedly be £300, £500 or even £600, according to The Times. The plans could save Brits hundreds of pounds and comes amid pressure for the government to roll out further help for UK households, Birmingham Live reports.

Energy price hikes could become smaller but more frequent under proposals from Ofgem earlier this week. UK households are also tasked with coping with rises in council tax, National Insurance, Netflix subscriptions and more.

Some people may also qualify for particular forms of help such as Winter Fuel Payments or the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Some charities may be able to offer grants. Recently, MPs called on the Government to "urgently" review Universal Credit rates, with Chancellor Rishi Sunak facing questions about why the £20 benefit uplift introduced during the pandemic could not be restored.

Mr Sunak replied the Government "want to make sure we get support to everyone in the way that suits them", and described the cut to the Universal Credit taper rate introduced last autumn as "the biggest tax cut for people in low incomes that we have ever seen".

The Chancellor had earlier told MPs: "There is no measure any government can take, no law we can pass, that can make these global forces disappear overnight. No honest chancellor could stand here and promise prices will not rise further or that the government can cover every extra pound on people's bills. But to suggest as we have heard today that there is no help available, as some have said today, is both misleading and irresponsible."
