UK hit by another earthquake as homeowners feel 'shaking jolt'

A second earthquake has shaken the UK just weeks after a 3.3-magnitude tremor rattled homes, with tremors felt as far away as London.

The latest quake occurred at 05:03 GMT, with its epicentre located off the coast of Silverdale in Morecambe Bay and measured at 2.5 magnitude.

It follows a stronger tremor in a similar area of Lancashire just a few weeks ago, which residents described as feeling like an “underground explosion.”

The earlier quake struck shortly after 11:23pm at the start of December and was felt across Lancashire and the southern Lake District, including Kendal and Ulverston, located within 12 miles of the epicentre, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Following today’s smaller tremor, the BGS said people reported “a quick, sharp shaking jolt and a thunderous noise,” with radiators and pictures rattling as a result.

The Volcano Discovery website, which also collects information on earthquakes, received more than 100 reports of tremors being felt.

It said towns or cities near the epicentre would have felt a “very weak shaking” including Silverdale, Morecambe and Haysham.
