UK heatwave: Why your hands and feet swell in hot weather - and how to soothe them

This week, temperatures across the UK have soared, with some Brits experiencing scorching temperatures of up to 37.8C.

Some sun-lovers have been embracing these unusually high temperatures, although many others are struggling to cope.

There are several physiological changes associated with hot weather, including excessive sweating, headaches and dehydration.

Meanwhile, some Brits may also experience swollen hands and feet during the UK heatwave.

The NHS explained: “Mild swelling of feet and hands may occur when first exposed to hot weather. This effect is more common in females.

“Swelling occurs when the blood supply to the skin increases which also radiates heat; fluid moves out of the blood vessels and into the tissues causing swelling.”

If you’ve suffered from swollen hands and feet, thankfully the swelling should reduce on its own.

The NHS added: “Heat related swelling should resolve spontaneously during acclimatisation, it should not be treated with water tablets, which may cause dehydration and delay acclimatisation.”

However, there are also several other measures you can take to soothe your hands and feet.

England gets battered by the hot weather for second day in a row

How to soothe your swollen hands and feet

- Soak your feet in cold water

- Drink plenty of water

- Ideally take your shoes off, or wear shoes that allow your feet to move freely, such as flip-flops

- Keep your legs elevated

- Wear support stockings

- Do some simple leg exercises, or a few minutes of walking if you feel up to it
