What temperature is too hot to walk a dog? Here’s what you need to know

  • Extreme heat is baking Europe and the United States this summer, and it’s not only a threat to humans.
  • The RSPCA has warned dog owners against walking their pets during the heat, labelling it a "silent killer" and advising "if in doubt, don't go out", especially in unshaded areas.
  • The UK charity also reminded owners of the extreme danger of leaving dogs in hot cars, where temperatures can quickly become fatal, even on moderately warm days.
  • Lauren Bennett from the RSPCA previously told BBC Breakfast that dogs should only be taken out briefly for toilet breaks in shaded areas.
  • The RSPCA spokesperson added: "Just like [with] people, it can be fatal, which is why we tell people to change their behaviour because our pets are completely under our control so the responsibility is on us."
