UK heatwave: Met Office confirms when 'above average' summer temperatures could return

‘Above-average’ summer temperatures could return next month, the Met Office has confirmed.

There has been plenty of speculation as to when the next heatwave could arrive as the extreme weather which has scorched much of England for over a week fades away.

The mercury has reached the dizzy heights of 31C throughout the level 3 heat health warning - which is one tier below a level 4 national emergency.

And with thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind warnings now dominating the forecasts, many people will be wondering when the next spell of hot weather will return.

We will have quite some time to wait for the next proper spell of warm weather, however, with nearly three weeks of unsettled conditions, rain and thunder all forecast, although there will be sunny spells.

A Met Office spokesman said: “It’s looking like an unsettled start to next week for much of the UK with some continuous thundery rain for most areas, particularly in the south.

“That’s kind of the theme for the early part of next week.

“Longer term there is lower confidence in the forecast but from mid-August signals are looking like temperatures will head back over average for the time of the year, and we could see some settled, dry conditions.

“August 6-10 is still looking mixed, but from mid-August initial signals show temperatures will be back above average.”

How hot it could be remains to be seen but given the recent weather warning for extreme heat was the first the Met Office has ever issued in the UK, we're unlikely to see prolonged periods of 30C temperatures.

August tends to see average highs of around 21C.
