UK heatwave: Is it really hot enough to cook an egg on the pavement?

The UK is in the middle of an intense record-breaking heatwave, with highs of 37C, surface temperatures reaching almost 60C and Friday (26 June), becoming the hottest June day ever on record.

Schools have closed, and travel has been severely disrupted, with red Met Office weather warnings plaguing the week.

On Wednesday (24 June), thermal cameras recorded highs of 57C on Oxford Street, as sweltering pedestrians made their way along the busy shopping street.

It’s unbelievably hot. So hot you could fry an egg on the pavement - or could you?

The Independent grabbed some eggs and headed out to the streets of London to test if Britons could ditch the frying pan and cook their eggs alfresco-style.
