UK heatwave: Doctor's tips on how to get to sleep as temperatures continue to rise

Temperatures across the UK continue to soar with some Brits experiencing scorching temperatures of up to 37.8C.

Some sun-lovers have been embracing these unusually high temperatures, although many others are struggling to cope.

In particular, many people have been having problems getting to sleep.

Now, Dr Simran Deo, at UK-based online doctor Zava UK, has shared her tips on how to get a good night’s sleep during the heatwave.

Speaking to Mirror Online, she said: “Try wearing clothing made of natural fibres such as linens and silks, or even sleeping naked, to help keep us cool at night time.

“Try keeping minimal bedding on the bed and use a light sheet instead of a duvet or blanket.

"Putting your sheet or pillowcase in the freezer or using one dampened with cold water can also help to cool you down.”

While putting your sheets in the freezer can help to cool you down, Dr Deo added that you should avoid using anything too cold.

She said: “You should avoid using things that feel too cold or uncomfortable on the skin as this may cause an ice burn.

“Some people may prefer to use cooling pads placed under the pillow or sheet. People have reported that placing a cold damp towel on your neck, wrists, elbows, groin, ankles, or behind your knees can also lead you to cool down rapidly.”

Who are the people at risk in the heatwave?

Finally, if you can, try to sleep downstairs and on your own.

Dr Deo added: “It’s common knowledge that hot air rises, so if it’s convenient you may find it easier to sleep on downstairs, or to move the mattress onto the floor.

“If you can sleep alone, it’s well known that body heat is great if you’re cold, but not the best thing on a hot and humid night.”
