UK health minister Nadine Dorries tested positive for coronavirus

UK health minister Nadine Dorries has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire said in a statement to the BBC: "I can confirm I have tested positive for coronavirus.

"As soon as I was informed I took all advised precautions and have been self isolating at home.

"Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: "Really sorry to hear Nadine has tested positive for coronavirus. She has done the right thing by self isolating at home, and both NHS and PHE staff have been brilliant. We all wish her well as she recovers.

"I understand why people are worried about this disease. We will do all we can to keep people safe, based on the best possible science."

Ms Dorries has attended a reception with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and was in close contact with hundreds of people in Parliament in the past week, the Mirror reports.

On Tuesday night nine further coronavirus cases were confirmed in Wales, bringing the total to 15.

Two of the patients are from Carmarthenshire and recently returned from northern Italy together.

The other seven patients were tested following tracing in connection with the Neath Port Talbot resident who tested positive at the weekend.

It comes as he start of the UK peak of the coronavirus epidemic is expected within the next fortnight, England's deputy chief medical officer has said, as cases rose to 382 and a sixth death was announced

Dr Jenny Harries defended the Government's decision to delay closing schools and the introduction of other stringent tactics, saying experts are assessing new cases on an hourly basis to achieve a "balanced response".

But new measures - including those aimed at protecting the elderly and vulnerable - are expected shortly as cases rise more rapidly across the UK.
