'UK has moral duty to rescue Afghans but Dominic Raab holidays as hell erupts'

When we need a Foreign Secretary on top of the job we’re lumbered with Dominic Raab, who had to scuttle back to Britain from a five-star holiday in Crete as the Taliban took over Afghanistan.

He was not the only one out of touch and neglecting their duty. Guess who was packing for a break in South West England when the crisis erupted? Boris Johnson, of course.

The Prime Minister and the whole Government must be held accountable during Wednesday’s emergency recall of Parliament.

The panic to get out at Kabul airport shows the terror of people fleeing a Taliban still brutal and oppressive behind all the slick PR.

Our country has a moral duty to rescue Afghans in danger because they worked for us and an obligation to give a safe haven to those likely to be on the Taliban hit list.

Calling the military to help out should have sirens blaring. More paramedics, crews, controllers and vehicles are urgently needed.

Treating ambulances as a Cinderella service is a dangerous and obvious mistake.

Yet sadly it is all too typical of a political regime failing to invest in crucial public services.

Either the Government injects extra cash into ambulances or the flashing blue light will be for a service crashing under the strain.
