UK Government updates advice on tourists going to Turkey after Istanbul explosion

The UK Government has updated its advice for tourists heading to Turkey following an explosion in Istanbul.

Turkish police said on Monday that they have detained a Syrian woman with suspected links to Kurdish militants and that she confessed to planting a bomb that exploded on a bustling pedestrian avenue in Istanbul, killing six people and wounding several dozen others.

Sunday’s explosion occurred on Istiklal Avenue, a popular thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants that leads to the famous Taksim Square.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCO) has issued advice to Brits who are in Turkey or planning to head there.

"On 13 November there was an explosion in Istiklal Avenue shopping street in central Istanbul.

"The British Embassy is in contact with local authorities and continues to seek further information. Travel within the city may be affected as the authorities continue their investigations.

"You should remain vigilant, and follow the advice of the local security authorities and/or your tour operator."

There are year-round flights from Newcastle International Airport to Turkey, with routes to Antalya continuing through November and December.

The FCO also advised anybody planning to go to Turkey to contact their travel operator. Those going to Turkey are told "it is more important than ever to get travel insurance and check it provides sufficient cover".

The FCO adds: "Further updates will be published when they are available."
