UK government provide update on when the Premier League could return

The Government has revealed talks with the Premier League to get football back up and running "as soon as possible".

All professional football in England has been suspended since the middle of March, with no set date on when it will return as the country continues to battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, reports in the media have suggested the Premier League is targeting a June return.

Now, Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden revealed the discussions over a return to action in order to "support the whole football community".

He told the House of Commons: "I personally have been in talks with the Premier League with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community.”

The Premier League and EFL have constantly reiterated their desire to ensure the 2019/20 season is completed.

Despite EURO2020 being delayed and the Dutch FA ruling there will be no promotion or relegation from the Eredivisie this season, England's governing bodies have stuck to their guns about completing this season.

This is welcome news for the likes of Liverpool, Leeds United and Coventry City that lead the table in England's top three tiers of football.
