UK Freedom Movement protests flop in Leeds as no one turns up for mass gatherings in parks

The UK Freedom Movement 'mass gatherings' calling for picnics, music and 'saying yes to life' never materialised in Leeds, as people wisely stuck to lockdown advice.

UK Freedom Movement circulated a poster for two events - one at Woodhouse Moor in Hyde Park and one at Middleton Park - despite large gatherings being prohibited by coronavirus legislation designed to stem the spread of Covid-19.

Similar protests were planned in London, Southampton, Nottingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Plymouth and Barnstaple.

People were encouraged to 'bring a picnic' and music along to defy social distancing guidelines - but from the scenes in Leeds today, nobody fancied lunch al fresco with an additional health risk.

Woodhouse Moor was deserted, bar a few joggers and people using the skate park - and in Middleton, our reporter was met with quiet scenes, bar a small group of four adults who did not openly identify as being part of the protest.

Similar 'mass gatherings' planned for Sheffield parks also saw no shows, bar a small group of lads on bikes in Endcliffe Park, who were spoken to by police after antagonising people with their 'very strong views', according to police at the scene.

A West Yorkshire Police officer said there had been no incidents at either location in Leeds.

A poster for the Leeds events began circulating on social media earlier this week, and was criticised by LeedsLive readers.

Diane Johnson said: "Should all be arrested for breaking the rules and fined . Totally irresponsible people let them meet the people who have lost family members."

People breaking coronavirus lockdown rules can be fined £100.

But there was no cause for police intervention today - as nobody had turned up.

On Wednesday the lockdown was eased to allow for unlimited outdoor exercise, with people allowed to spend time in parks as long as they socially distance themselves.

However mass gatherings and meeting up with more than one person from outside your household is still prohibited.

Who are UK Freedom Movement?

The 'UK Freedom Movement' is touted as an anti-conspiracy group aimed at "exposing the truth regarding global affairs", according to its Facebook page.

However Lord John Mann, former Labour MP for Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire, has branded UK Freedom Movement as right wing extremists.

He tweeted: ''The UK Freedom Movement with its so called protests is a political organisation of right wing extremists led by Jayda Fransen of Britain First.

''I have requested police and Home Secretary action to prohibit an illegal set of political rallies.''
