UK Foreign Office issues fresh advice against all cruise ship holidays due to coronavirus

The government has issued fresh advice warning against cruise holidays despite flights and other forms of travel resuming.

On March 12, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised the over 70s and those with underlying health conditions to avoid cruise ships, which are seen as risky for the spread of infection.

Following the imposition of lockdown, everything but essential travel out of the country was banned altogether.

But with more and more flights starting to depart for the countries on the UK's new exemption list, which allows for quarantine-free travel, the government has updated its advice for cruise ships.

People of all age groups are now advised against cruises, with people advised to cancel any planned trips.

The updated advice reads: "The Foreign & Commonwealth Office advises against cruise ship travel at this time. This is due to the ongoing pandemic and is based on medical advice from Public Health England.

"The government will continue to review its cruise ship travel advice based on the latest medical advice.

"If you have future cruise travel plans, you should speak to your travel operator, or the travel company you booked with, for further advice.

"The Foreign & Commonwealth Office continues to support the Department for Transport’s work with industry for the resumption of international cruise travel."

Many operators have already cancelled cruises for the forseeable future.

Most of TUI's cruises have been preemptively cancelled until late 2020 or even until 2021, while P&O has paused its operations up to October 2020.
