UK forecast predicts temperatures will hit 20C for late May bank holiday weekend

Brits will have to endure more torrential downpours and thunder storms today and tomorrow but blistering highs of 20C are on the horizon.

Forecasters predict a washout start of the week but the mercury is expected to climb as the month draws to an end.

By the bank holiday weekend the temperature is set to scorch to highs of up to 20C expected in London.

Sunny intervals and a gentle breeze are forecast on the last bank holiday weekend in May, according to the BBC, and Brits can expect days of sunshine.

Today, though, will see more wet and miserable weather as washout May continues.

A Met Office forecaster said of Monday's outlook: "The week ahead doesn't offer much let up from this cool and rather soggy May.

"A showery cool start to the week, something a bit drier for a day or so before turning wet and windy again later.

"It's going to be another cool and rather showery day."

The forecaster added there would be some 'heavy, thundery showers' during the day and into the afternoon.

Temperatures are likely to creep into the double digits for many areas with highs in the south of up to 17C.

And the wet weather will continue into Tuesday where more showers are predicted with high winds set to batter parts of Scotland.

With the relentless rainfall the Environment Agency has issued warnings for flooding in England.

There are currently two flood warnings, meaning immediate action is needed, for the Bessy Brook at Lostock and Borsdane and Hockery Brook at Hindley, both in the north west.

There are a further nine flood alerts, meaning people should be prepared for flooding, in waterways across England.

But things are looking up from Friday May 28 with the bank holiday weekend set to enjoy balmy highs of 20C.

In London, the June forecast predicts that temperatures will hit at least 20C for 16 consecutive days, MyLondon reports.

The rest of the UK will also enjoy sunshine with highs of 21C in Newcastle and Manchester, with the mini heatwave to start on June 15 and end on July 1.

Five-day UK weather forecast

Today:

Cloudy start in some eastern areas, but sunny spells developing, before showers develop once again. Some heavy, thundery showers with hail by afternoon, focused in eastern, southern and central areas, probably fewer in the west by then. A little warmer.

Tonight:

Showers easing with clear spells developing, although further showers into the southwest later. Cloudier in the far north with rain at times. Possible rural frost some northern areas.

Tuesday:

Rain in the far north edging south into mainland Scotland and turning showery. Elsewhere, another day of sunshine and showers, heaviest with risk of thunder in the south.
