UK extreme weather warning - here's how hot it will be in Edinburgh

With temperatures set to soar above 33°C across parts of the UK this week, the Met Office issued its first ever 'amber extreme heat warning'.

The warning - which is similar to those issued when heavy rain or snow is forecast - will remain in force until the end of Thursday.

This warning has been issued to large part of Wales, all of south-west England and parts of southern and central England.

This warning, however, does not affect Scotland - but Edinburgh is set to experience temperatures of up to 28°C across the capital on Thursday.

The Met Office weather update states that today, "Many areas will have a dry day with plenty of sunshine, although some cold sea fog may affect the east coast. It will mostly be very warm, locally hot in the southern Borders and southwest.

Onshore breezes will keep Edinburgh and Lothian a little cooler, with a maximum temperature of 26 °C."

As for the rest of the week, they have stated, "Remaining dry and sunny, some overnight low cloud across Lothian and Borders burning off in the morning. Staying very warm, but hot in the southwest. East coast will be cooler."

Humidity will be in the 90s for much of the week, sitting at 88% at just 8am this morning.

There is also bad news for all hay fever sufferers in the capital, as the high pollen count is to remain for the rest of July, and much of August as well.

The people of Edinburgh have also been advised to slap the suncream on by forecasters, as they predict a high UV rating of around 6 by 1pm each day.

Tonight's immediate forecast

Some evening sunshine across Lothian, Edinburgh and Borders before low cloud becomes widespread through the night. Rather warm. Minimum temperature 14 °C.

Wednesday's forecast

Overnight low cloud burning off in the morning. Otherwise a dry and sunny day. Hot in many areas, but eastern coastal areas somewhat cooler. Maximum temperature 28 °C.

Outlook from Thursday onwards

Remaining dry and sunny, some overnight low cloud across Lothian and Borders burning off in the morning. Staying very warm, but hot in the southwest. East coast will be cooler.
