UK Eurovision act Mae Muller battles illness as she performs entry live for first time

Mae Muller battled illness as she performed the UK's song for this year's Eurovision Song Contest live for the first time on Saturday night, as she told fans she 'couldn't wait' to sing it again when she's '100% healthy.'

Earlier this month Mae, who supported Little Mix on tour last year, was announced as the UK's Eurovision act, after speculation linked a whole host of stars with the honour, including bookies favourite Birdy, Weekends singer Freya Ridings and Brit nominee Rina Sawayama.

Mae was quick to share her excitement at being chosen, with her enjoying her first bit of primetime TV spotlight as the video for her Eurovision entry, I Wrote A Song, had its premiere right before an episode of The Apprentice, as millions tuned in.

The UK did very well last year thanks to Sam Ryder and his track Spaceman and, like Sam, Mae is willing to put the air miles in to get her name and songs out there. And first up on her list of pre-Eurovision appearances was a performance at a massive event in Barcelona this weekend.

Unfortunately for Mae, she was struck down by illness in the lead up to the packed out party, with her condition hampering her performance at the event, after she joked on TikTok that she was feeling 'in Spain without the S.'

As a video of it was shared on YouTube, Eurovision fans were quick to comment, with a number of them raising concerns about her vocals, including one who commented: "I liked one thing about this - the dancers."

However, many others were quick to defend the 25-year-old, with one replying: "Jesus guys, she's not been feeling 100%, cut her some slack! It was mighty queen like for her to even be up on that stage." Also backing her, a second reacted: "I think Mae slayed AND she was sick too just think what she’s going to be like when she’s at 100% Love this song SO SO MUCH"
