UK Eurovision act James Newman responds to zero points despair with defiant post

The United Kingdom's Eurovision act James Newman has released an upbeat statement and thanked fans following his humiliation in Saturday's final.

The singer/songwriter was full of enthusiasm going into the contest at the weekend but suffered a cruel blow after performing original track Embers, when it failed to get a single point from either the juries or public.

The camera cut to an defiant James as he discovered his 'nil points' fate, with him cheering and earning applause from the other acts around him in the green room.

The UK Eurovision result has led to plenty of furious and fed up fans calling for the UK to boycott the event in the future but James showed no bitterness at all in the post he put out on Monday afternoon.

The former Newcastle University student wrote: "I want to focus on the positives of this amazing experience. I stood on a stage and sang to hundreds of millions of people with a song that I wrote and love.

"I've learnt so much from the amazing people who gave everything to help me live my dream, the dancers, my choreographer, my vocal coach, everyone from my label, my manager and the BBC and all the people behind the scenes at Eurovision and the arena.

"All these people are the best in the business and I got the chance to work with them and share this crazy experience that I'm so lucky to have the chance to do."

The 35-year-old, who won a Brit with Rudimental for their number 1 Waiting All Night, added: "The thing about writing songs is that there is no guarantee that a song you think will connect with people, will connect with an audience.

"Thank you to all the amazing dedicated fans who have supported me through the whole thing and made it all worth it. Because at the end of the day they are the people who you do this all for."

James' dignified response earned him admiration from many Twitter users, with former Eurovision winner, Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker replying: "Fabulous message, James. I loved your reaction on the night. You were gracious and took the result with great humour."

A fan told him: "Class response but this could have been the best song on the planet and that corrupt competition would have led to nothing as usual."
