UK Eurovision 2020 entry revealed as James Newman's My Last Breath

While ne won't be performing for votes you'll still get to see this year's UK Eurovision act in action on Saturday night.

Let's be honest things didn't go to plan for the UK in Israel last year with Hartlepool singer Michael Rice finishing bottom of the leaderboard with his song Bigger Than Us.

Michael represented his country after topping the public vote in selection show Eurovision: You Decide but this year the entry has been chosen by the BBC together with record label BMG, with viewers having no say at all.

The singer who was tasked with trying to get us near the top of the leaderboard in Rotterdam on Saturday, May 16, before Eurovision 2020 was scrapped due to coronavuirus, was James Newman, with his track My Last Breath, which premiered on Radio 1 on Thursday morning.

On representing the UK at Eurovision, James said: "It’s such an honour to be representing the United Kingdom this year at Eurovision – I still can’t quite believe it! I’m also so proud to be taking ‘My Last Breath’ as the song.

"I wrote it with some of my best friends, who are amazingly talented songwriters in their own right. I knew it was ‘the one’ after first recording it. I just loved the simplicity and universal message of the song.”

The UK hasn't always had such a bad track record at Eurovision with wins in the past for the likes of Brotherhood of Man, Bucks Fizz and Katrina & the Waves, whose song Love Shine A Light was our last winner in 1997.

The best result we've had in recent years came in 2009 when Jade Ewen's It's My Time finished fifth. Last year's contest was won by the Netherlands thanks to their entry Arcade by Duncan Laurence.
