UK election polls tracker: Tory support hits 40 per cent as lead over Labour Party widens

Tory support has hit 40 per cent, increasing the party's lead over Labour ahead of the general election, according to the rolling average of opinion polls.

Labour had been creeping up on the Conservatives over the past week but as of Friday support for Jeremy Corbyn's party remained at 29 per cent.

The Tories have seen a steady climb from 34 per cent over the past two weeks, reaching 40 per cent on Friday.

It comes as Boris Johnson this morning said the Tories "have got to do better" on the NHS after key figures showed the service was performing at the worst level on record.

The latest polls suggest support for the Liberal Democrats and Brexit Party is continuing to fall.

The Lib Dems have seen a drop in support to 16 per cent, after starting at 19 per cent when the election was called.

Support for Nigel Farage's Brexit Party hit seven per cent on Friday, after he refused to pull candidates in further constituencies following the decision at the beginning of the week to stand down in 317 Tory-held seats.

The Greens stock has fallen from five to three per cent.

The latest figures come after the Prime Minister made his first keynote speech in the general election campaign this week, pledging to drive a clean energy revolution while investing in the NHS, cutting crime and helping people with the cost of living if he wins on December 12.

Labour has meanwhile vowed to connect millions of people with a fast and free full-fibre Internet.

Tory supporters who oppose no-deal Brexit were also told to consider "lending" their votes to the Lib Dems, while two former Labour MPs urged Labour voters to support the Tories.
