UK e-commerce giant ASOS to hire 1,600 at new Atlanta area warehouse

ATLANTA _ The metro Atlanta area's surge in warehousing ticked up yet another notch Tuesday with an announcement that British fashion merchant ASOS plans to open an e-commerce fulfillment center south of Atlanta it says it will eventually employ 1,600 workers.

ASOS joins the ranks of Amazon, Tory Burch, Home Chef and many other brands in establishing new distribution centers in the metro area. Many of the newest centers, built amid the rise in online retail, are designated for shipping online orders.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal's office issued a news release stating ASOS will spend $40 million on the new center. The company, which specializes in apparel for young adults, sells its own branded clothing and apparel by other makers.

The Atlanta region is a hub for the Southeast and trade east of the Mississippi with its rail and freeway network, and the state boasts the bustling ports of Savannah and Brunswick and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Brent Dorfman, ASOS vice president of logistics, called the Atlanta area "an ideal location for us" in the press release.

"It is a vibrant and growing international city with a diverse culture," he said. "We will use the region's transportation network and deep pool of talent to deliver ASOS' best-in-class service to U.S. customers."
