UK drivers issued urgent sunglasses warning or risk £5,000 fine

With sunny skies and temperatures forecast to hit 27 degrees Celsius in Glasgow this week, many people will be driving in hot and bright conditions.

Ahead of the clear weather, drivers have been issued a warning about the wearing of sunglasses. If you forget to do so, you could be hit with a £5,000 fine.

As stated in the Highway Code, if you do not adequately prepare for driving in sunny conditions, you could be slapped with the hefty fine. Rule 97 of the code states that "the clothing and footwear you choose to wear whilst you are driving must not prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner".

In addition, as reported by Birmingham Live, you could also be in violation of another rule. According to Rule 237, motorists are required to reduce their speed or pull over when they are "dazzled by bright sunlight" — which sunglasses can prevent.

Violating this rule could land you with a £100 fine and three points added to your licence. Challenging this and losing could see the fine upped to £5,000.

Andrew Jervis from car repair service ClickMechanic stated: “Many will welcome a few days of sun, but it could spell disaster for unprepared motorists. We all have a responsibility to drive with care and attention, and we need to be on alert for anything that can affect our ability to do that.

“Sun glare is often tricky to drive with as it can affect how we perceive the road conditions, while an unexpected short burst of light from behind a cloud can really harm our ability to see.

“It can be worse when the roads are wet after a rainy spell, with sunlight reflecting off puddles and into our eyes. It’s important to be on guard for the adverse effects of sun glare while driving, whether this is through wearing sunglasses, removing any shiny objects from the dashboard or lowering the sun visors.”
