UK dentists explains why its cheaper to go abroad for 'Turkey Teeth'

One of the latest cosmetic trends in recent years is "Turkey Teeth."

This involves jetting off abroad to get cosmetic dentistry work done, such as veneers or crowns, resulting in the perfect smile. Celebrities have been championing the trend with the likes of Katie Price and reality TV stars going abroad to get work done at a fraction of the price.

While some dental experts have warned people in the UK of the dangers of heading to countries such as Turkey to get work done, others have explained why people may feel like they have no other option. UK dentistry often comes at a much higher price than abroad and patients find themselves on endless waiting lists.

Resorting to travelling abroad means people can get the perfect smile at a fraction of the cost and have a little holiday thrown in while they're at it. The British Dental Association told the ECHO that costs are cheaper abroad due to the cost of living. Using Turkey as an example, a spokesperson said: "The cost of living is cheaper so this will be reflected in the prices charged."

They also explained why the UK is experiencing such long waiting lists for any dental procedure currently. They said: "The reasons why people are struggling to get an appointment in England is because the government only funds care for half of the population, therefore it is under funded to meet demand.

"NHS dental access problems pre-date covid, but the pandemic has exacerbated longstanding concerns. 40 million appointments were lost as a result of all the restrictions on delivering dentistry, and could take years to clear."

Things to do before having dental cosmetic surgery

  • Always thoroughly research the clinic, and the consultant doing the procedure before making any contact.
  • Don’t be afraid to call and ask to speak with your consultant to ensure that there is no language barrier and that communication is clear
  • Ask the right questions; what materials do they work with? What qualifications do they have? You can even go the next step and contact the issuing body to verify their claims.
