A further 22 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in the UK

A further 22 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in the UK, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

It is one of the lowest daily number of national deaths since pre-lockdown in mid-March. The number of deaths on June 22 was lower when there were 15 recorded deaths in the UK.

The Department of Health and Social Care said 44,220 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Saturday – up by 22 from 44,198 on Saturday.

The government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have now passed 55,000, as there is a time lag in reporting.

The DHSC also said that in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Sunday, there were 516 positive coronavirus test results.

Overall, a total of 285,416 cases have now been confirmed.

Earlier the number of deaths in hospital in England, had increased by 18 bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 28,889, NHS England said.

Patients were aged between 54 and 94 years old and all had known underlying health conditions.

Public Health Wales said one more person has died after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths there to 1,531. There were 15 further positive tests in Wales bringing the total to 15,890.

Sunday's figure is lower than the 67 UK deaths that were reported by the Department of Health and Social Care on Saturday.

Globally, there have been more than 528,000 confirmed deaths.

Restrictions have begun to ease in England as pubs, restaurants and hairdressers were allowed to reopen - with additional measures in place - from yesterday.

Despite fears that there would be an increase in attendances at hospital Accident and Emergency departments due to drink-related incidents, the night passed without any significant incidents.
