UK coronavirus death toll rises by 627 in 24 hours

The number of people who have died after contracting coronavirus has reached 32,692, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.

That is an increase of 627 deaths from 32,065 the same point yesterday.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has increased by 3,403 from the same point yesterday, bringing the total to 226,463.

An update from the Department of Health said: "As of 9am 12 May, there have been 2,007,146 tests, with 85,293 tests on 11 May. 1,460,517 people have been tested of which 226,463 tested positive.

"As of 5pm on 11 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus, across all settings, 32,692 have sadly died."

The Department of Health releases a daily death toll which includes deaths in the community as well as those in hospital.

However it is lower than the weekly death toll announced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as it does not include suspected cases - only cases where people have died after testing positive.
