UK death toll of people with coronavirus passes 17,000

More than 17,000 people have now died with coronavirus in the UK.

The latest figures released on Tuesday show a total of 17,337 people have died in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, with the death tally up 823 in the past day.

The total number of confirmed cases in the UK now stands at 129,044.

It comes as the number of people who have died after testing positive for the virus in Wales reached 609 after 25 more deaths were reported on Tuesday.

Public Health Wales also confirmed that 304 more people have tested positive for the virus to bring the overall total to 7,850.

But the actual number is likely to be far higher as testing continues to be prioritised for frontline healthcare staff and patients in hospital.

English health secretary Matt Hancock and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam will give a briefing at Downing Street at 5pm.
