UK daily coronavirus hospital death toll rises again by 425 taking total past 27,000

The UK's coronavirus daily death toll in hospitals has risen again to more than 400, taking the total beyond 27,000.

A total of 425 deaths have been recorded in UK hospitals in the last 24 hours - 350 in England, 50 in Scotland, 16 in Wales and nine in Northern Ireland, respective health authorities announced.

It brings the overall confirmed deaths in UK hospitals to 27,185, and today's figure is a steep increase on yesterday's 222, albeit slightly lower than the 453 hospital deaths recorded a week ago on May 5.

The tragic numbers continue to rise after heartbreaking figures earlier revealed more than 8,300 people had died in English and Welsh care homes by the end of last month after contracting Covid-19.

And new figures released by the Office for National Statistics suggest the UK's true death toll is more than 40,000.

The official Department of Health toll currently stands at 32,065, with nearly 26,769 having died in hospitals as of yesterday.

Yesterday's rise of 222 was the second-lowest since March, but medics have cautioned that Britain could still face a second peak if the next stages of the government response are not handled carefully.

There were 16 coronavirus-linked deaths reported in Wales, health officials confirmed.

Scotland's death toll today rose to 1,912 - with 50 more fatalities confirmed in the past 24 hours.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced 13,763 people in Scotland have now tested positive for the virus, a rise of 136 from 13,627 the day before.

As of last night 1,618 patients were in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, up 165 from 1,453 the previous day, Ms Sturgeon added, of which 81 are in intensive care, a rise of one.

The rise in suspected cases in hospitals is being looked into, Ms Sturgeon added, as she cautioned against any "undue concern".

NHS England said that the 350 new deaths brought the national total to 23,709.

Forty-four occurred on May 11, 90 on Sunday, and 44 on Saturday May 9.

The figures also show 92 of the new deaths took place between May 1 and May 8, 76 took place in April, while the remaining four deaths occurred in March, with the earliest new death taking place on March 17.

Seven of the 350 were aged under 40, 36 between 40 and 60, with the rest aged over 60.

The figures published today by NHS England show April 8 continues to have the highest number for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day, with a current total of 887.

In care homes, the decline in the number of deaths has been slowest, the figures show.

ONS statistician Nick Stripe told the BBC: "Care homes (are) showing the slowest decline, sadly.

"For the first time that I can remember, there were more deaths in total in care homes than there were in hospitals in that week."

The highest proportion of coronavirus deaths was among those aged between 80 and 84, with 36.7% of fatalities linked to the virus, today's ONS figures showed.

The largest number of Covid-19 deaths was in those aged 90 years and over, with 1,494 deaths.
