UK daily coronavirus cases at lowest level since September as 5,177 more catch disease

A further 5,177 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in a significant fall on this time last week.

Last Sunday 6,035 positive cases were confirmed in the UK, the Department of Health and Social Care reported.

That represents a drop of 858 or 14 per cent in a week.

Over the past seven days 41,968 cases were confirmed in the country - a 31 per cent drop on the seven days before.

Today's figure is the lowest since September 28, when 4,044 people tested positive.

By way of comparison, on December 29 alone 81,566 positive cases were confirmed.

On another positive note, the country's vaccination rollout continues to go well, with 22,213,112 having had the first jab.

It was reported earlier today that the first NHS data has shown that a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine dramatically reduces symptomless Covid-19 cases from passing on the virus.

The findings from Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge indicated 75% protection and suggest that as well as reducing deaths, the vaccination programme will bring infections down quickly.

Cambridge University researchers found that one dose reduced by four-fold the number of asymptomatic  coronavirus  infections once immunity developed 12 days later.

Vaccination for health care workers began on December 8 with mass vaccination from January 8.

Researchers screened similar numbers of vaccinated and unvaccinated staff between January 18 and 31 using around 4,400 PCR tests per week.

The findings also appear to endorse the safety of the UK’s decision to delay second doses for up to 12 weeks.
