Health care workers give out injections of Covid vaccines in south Wales
(Picture: PA)Coronavirus vaccines have prevented 10,400 deaths in people aged 60 and over, according to Public Health England (PHE).
PHE found that vaccines had prevented more than 9,000 fatalities in those aged over 80 after analysing figures from December 8 to the end of March.
They added that they was “increasing evidence that vaccines help reduce transmission”.
The analysis “compared the observed number of deaths with the number of deaths that would have been expected if the vaccine hadn’t been given during this time period”.
The Government has said plans to “safely and sustainably” resume travel will be formally reviewed on June 28, when the rules on testing and quarantine could be relaxed for certain countries.
Ministers are expected to allow quarantine-free travel from May 17 to a small number of “green-listed” countries that have a high level of vaccinations.
But travel firms have slammed measures to force holidaymakers returning from low-risk destinations to take an “expensive and unnecessary” type of coronavirus test. Such tests must be the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) type which cost around £120, said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
It comes as a poll carried out by the Times found that Britons “overwhelmingly” trust the AstraZeneca vaccine, with 75 per cent saying the jab is safe.
