UK Covid LIVE: School bubbles could be scrapped by autumn as hopes fade for US travel corridor

Covid school bubble arrangements should end as soon as possible, the new Children's Commissioner for England has said.

Dame Rachel de Souza said there was an urgent need for children to get back to normal as lockdown restrictions had been a "real trauma" for many young people. Her call came as The Guardian reported ministers are preparing to overhaul the system for schools in England when they return in September following the summer break.

It comes as hopes for a travel corridor between the US and UK before the end of summer are fading.

According to reports in The Times the talks are unlikely to reach a positive conclusion before the end of next month despite intense lobbying from airlines. The deadlock has come because of anxiety over the spread of the Delta variant in the UK and uncertainty over the status of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the US.
