The prime minister has ruled out the rapid expansion of the green travel list dashing European holiday hopes for UK travellers.

Boris Johnson said it was doubtful that the list would be expanded “very rapidly” due to the spread of the Indian coronavirus variant.

Speaking at the Downing Street press conference yesterday, Mr Johnson said: “There’s a very limited list, as you know, and we will certainly be making sure that people travelling abroad will be subject to all the tests and constraints to prevent the virus being reimported.

“That’s why it’s such a tiny list of countries and I don’t expect we will be adding to it very rapidly.”

The current list of countries Britons can travel to without needing to quarantine include: Portugal, Israel, Gibraltar, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland and the Faroe Islands and the Falklands.

This is in addition to the remote territories of the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Saint Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.
