The Delta Covid variant, first found in India, is responsible for 91 per cent of new cases of coronavirus in the UK, Matt Hancock has said.
The Health Secretary, appearing in front of the Science and Technology and Health and Social Care committees, said according to data he saw on Wednesday night the Delta variant now has a strong foothold in the UK.
“The Delta variant now comprises 91% of new cases in the UK,” he said.
It comes as Covid cases have more than doubled in one week from about 5,000 a day to more than 11,000.
