Nearly 2,000 Covid cases in Scotland have been liked to football fans watching Euro 2020 fixtures - with two thirds having come from supporters who came to London to watch England v Scotland.

A total of 397 of these were fans at the game at Wembley Stadium while hundreds of others were among the ticketless fans who came to the capital. Some 1,294 people who later had a laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 diagnosis were in their transmission period during their trip to London.

Meanwhile it has emerged Covid passports will not be compulsory at music festivals, sports events and other mass gatherings when lockdown restrictions are lifted next month. Ministers are set to shelve plans for the mandatory use of ‘Covid certification’ after Freedom Day on July 19, according to the Daily Mail.

It comes as a World Health Organisation special envoy on Covid-19 warned against ditching all remaining protections against the virus on a “particular date”.
